With the internet-oriented world, English is beginning to assume a new role as a global language for international communication. Globalization, however, has, by no means, eclipsed various countries’ efforts to defend their national identities. National flavour is seen, nowadays, as a distinct advantage in speech, provided the ‘national distinctiveness’ doesn’t interfere with ‘international intelligibility’. These two tendencies are to be perceived as complementary rather than contradictory. It should not represent a kind of tension between ‘nativists’ and the ‘purists’, or a dilemma between ‘national identity’ and ‘international intelligibility’.
