In 1973 Hans Wolfgang Opderbecke took over from Charlotte Lehmann as editor. In 1994 this was passed on to Bernd Landauer, Munich, and in 2002 to Kai Taeger, Regensburg. Since 2006 Jürgen Schüttler, Erlangen, is the editor-in-chief. A total of 22,500 copies are printed, distributed and made available to all members of DGAI and BDA ( Chap. 4). The intended establishment of a »Division for Professional Concerns« was abandoned 3 months later (other than in the title of the magazine), after the legal implications had been discussed and after resolution by the DGA Executive Committee on 23 February 1961.

In order to document the multidisciplinary approach to intensive care medicine in Germany representatives of this organization together with representatives of the Professional Association of German Anaesthetists and the Professional Association of German Internists founded the German Interdisciplinary Association of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) as an umbrella organi- zation on 29 January 1977 in Frankfurt/Main in order to thwart the attempts – stimulated by developments abroad – to also form a German Society of Intensive Care Medicine in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Academy has achieved the significant objective of creating a European Diploma in Anaesthesiology, which has a valued role in the quality assurance and quality improvement in continuing education in anaesthesiology in Europe. The Academy ran in addition certified international continuing education courses in selected centres and published the European Journal of Anaesthesiology (EJA). The first German »Academicians«, who were appointed to the office of President were Wolfgang Dick of Mainz (1991–1994), following his term as Secretary which he took up in 1983.
