Some are controversial: the disposable nappy, the contraceptive pill, aerosol deodorant and plastic bags have had an enormous impact, irrespective of the negative press they have received.

It is widely accepted that oral contraception has given women more control over when they have children, allowing them to plan high-powered careers before marriage and motherhood. According to a 2002 study led by Harvard University, the number of female graduates entering professional programmes increased substantially just after 1970, and the age at which women first married also began to rise around the same year. Progress has remained steady since then; in fact, the proportion of women on the boards of Europe’s top companies increased from 8% in 2004 to 12% in 2010.

This is part of a wider market of online-only contact lens retailers, where businesses battle to provide the lowest price, taking a share of the income that walk-in opticians would otherwise have received. However, the greatest threat to the soft contact lens industry is the availability of laser eye surgery.
